Abundance and distribution of Lithophaga (Mytilidae) in extant and fossil oysters: taphonomic and paleobiological implications Ameghiniana
Mauna,Cecilia; Casadío,Silvio; Parras,Ana; Pascual,Marcela.
In this study we analyze the abundance and distribution patterns of Lithophaga patagonica in valves of Ostrea puelchana and compare them to those of Lithophaga sp. observed on the fossil species " Ostrea " patagonica and " Ostrea " alvarezii from the late Miocene Puerto Madryn Formation. No specimen of the fossil oysters showed borings of Lithophaga sp. on the interior surface of the valves. This suggests that they were produced while the oysters were still living and, at the same time, that the oyster beds were buried rapidly after death. In Ostrea puelchana the boring abundance was significantly higher for the left valve and, within it, the areas more heavily bored were the umbones and the platform. The same results were obtained for valves of " Ostrea "...

Late Maastrichtian-Danian Mytilids and Pinnids (Mollusca: Bivalvia) from Northern Patagonia, Argentina Ameghiniana
Griffin,Miguel; Parras,Ana; Casadío,Silvio.
The Upper Cretaceous - lower Paleogene rocks from northern Patagonia yield a rich fauna of marine mollusks that may be useful in elucidating paleobiogeographic and paleoenvironmental changes taking place across the K/P boundary in the region. Most of the mollusk faunas remain poorly understood, as the preservation is generally deficient. This paper describes three new species of mytilids (Septifer mayai n. sp., Mytilaster ? edseli n. sp. and Gregariella amara n. sp.), and records four species of pinnids, one of which is new (Plesiopinna pampeana n. sp.). All the material comes from the Maastrichtian Jagüel Formation, and the Maastrichtian/Danian Roca Formation, exposed in the provinces of Río Negro, Mendoza and La Pampa (Argentina). A survey of the...

Maastrichtian and Danian species of Turkostreini (Ostreidae, Crassostreinae) from the Neuquén Basin, Argentina Ameghiniana
Griffin,Miguel; Casadío,Silvio; Parras,Ana.
The record of Turkostrea damboreneae nom. nov. and Cubitostrea primordialis n. sp. in the Maastrichtian Jagüel and Roca Formations and of Turkostrea argentina n. sp., in the Danian beds of the Roca Formation reveals that the two genera involved have a history that reaches back into the Late Cretaceous in northern Patagonia. Turkostrea damboreneae nom. nov. and Cubitostrea primordialis n. sp. are the two oldest representatives of the genera in which they belong. The two species of Turkostrea show clear affinities with other species of this genus that thrived in the Paleogene of the Northern Hemisphere. Cubitostrea primordialis n. sp. is closely allied to the previously known Paleocene species common in the region. While Turkostrea appears to have survived...

New dinoflagellate cyst species from the Calafate Formation (Maastrichtian), Austral Basin, Argentina Ameghiniana
Guler,M. Verónica; Guerstein,G. Raquel; Casadío,Silvio.
The aim of this paper is to erect four new dinoflagellate cyst species from the Maastrichtian Calafate Formation, Austral Basin, Argentina. Andalusiella spinosa sp. nov. is strongly acrocavate and possesses a periphragm covered with spines. Palaeocystodinium pilatum sp. nov. has a periphragm densely covered with fine, flexuous, hair-like projections, shortening towards the end of the horns, and a finely granulate endophragm. The large peridinialean Caligodinium perforatum sp. nov. shows the hypocystal archeopyle typical for the genus, with a simple triplacoid opercular piece and a microfoveolate autophragm surrounded by a perforate flocculent calyptra. Hafniasphaera australis sp. nov. is differentiated from other species of the genus Hafniasphaera by the...
